New York state has put the city of Rye on notice for its apparent failure to respond after raw sewage leaking into the Blind Brook made its way into the Sound Shore.

More than two months ago, officials from the environmental group Save the Sound alerted Rye officials and the state Department of Environmental Conservation that they found raw sewage, potentially millions of gallons, flowing from a catch basin near I-95 into the Blind Brook, according to this report by News12.

The DEC sent a letter to the City of Rye manager demanding they fix the broken pipes buried under the highway. The city manager was given until the end of this month to explain what Rye has done.

Rye officials told News 12 they are dealing with the leak. They said getting access to the leaking pipe was problematic because it involved working with the MTA and Thruway Authority to locate it.

Rye officials said repairing the leak could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
